The Planner assists the general public with planning, zoning and development concerns and inquiries; and provides staff support to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment and the Murphy Community Development Corporation.  This position interacts with developers, engineers and city departments providing professional guidance and information, and assists with special planning and zoning projects as assigned.


  • Provides first point of contact for the public, property owners and developers seeking basic planning and zoning information
  • Conducts technical review of plans for compliance with zoning and development regulations, i.e., concept plans, site plans, subdivision plats, specific use permits and rezoning proposals
  • Coordinates and attends pre-development and technical review meetings on development projects
  • Performs research, analysis and development of agenda items and packets for Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Murphy Community Development Corporation and City Council
  • Review, research and prepare ordinance amendments as directed
  • Assists with the comprehensive plan and related updates
  • Assists with the implementation the City’s economic development program; maintains database of available commercial properties and related web site
  • Works in a high traffic area that requires good customer service skills as well as ability to focus on detailed work and projects
  • Assists the public with questions requiring knowledge of policies and procedures; confers with citizens on problems and assists and/or directs them for resolution
  • Prepares classified and confidential documents involving certain critical and sensitive situations
  • Maintains department’s records in accordance with the City’s Records Management System
  • Adheres to City personnel and safety policies and procedures
  • Assumes duties of the Community and Economic Development Director as requested and/or in their absence
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned


  • Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Landscape Architecture or related field
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible municipal or local government planning experience or an equivalent combination of college education and experience; Master's degree in the field may substitute for a portion of the required experience
  • A valid Class C Driver's License - driving record must be in compliance with City policy


  • Master's Degree in Urban Planning or related field
