Asakura Robinson is seeking a Planner who will specialize in creating and implementing creative, equitable and meaningful public engagement to join our Houston office. The candidate will have a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field and entry-level or internship experience with public engagement and shall demonstrate a high level of creative technical skills and highly developed visual and verbal communication skills. Experience in both online and in person engagement, working with both community members and other professionals, including artists, and experience with web design and video production is desired. Ideal candidates will express an interest in professional work with underserved communities, working with multidisciplinary design or research teams, and be driven in their work and desire for advancement. A strong interest and belief in public engagement and desire to work closely with communities to achieve their vision is a necessity. Please mention any fluency in additional languages, especially Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Somali or Hmong, in your application as well.

In addition to developing and implementing engagement plans, the candidate will be responsible for documenting and archiving the firm’s engagement methods and maintaining a library of engagement materials. The candidate will participate in a variety of projects including community development, economic development, transportation planning, small area planning, housing, urban design, urban ecology and landscape architecture throughout Texas and nationally. The candidate will work closely with our planning and design teams in Austin, Houston, Minneapolis, New Orleans, San Antonio and Seattle. A successful candidate will be able to balance individual work with team based feedback and collaboration.

Job Role:

Candidates will apply engagement techniques and procedures, which may include the following:

  • Works with project managers to develop public engagement plans for planning and design projects.
  • Develops public engagement materials.
  • Sets engagement metrics based on goals of the project, especially as it relates to equity.
  • Develops project websites and social media.
  • Plans and facilitates public engagement events.
  • Documents engagement processes through summaries, photographs, videos, or other means.
  • Develops an archive and library of public engagement materials.
  • Participates in creating the narrative content for the urban planning process.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of urban planning, design and public engagement.

Skills Required:

  • Fluency with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, and storytelling aptitude though data visualization and information design is highly desirable.
  • Strong visual and spoken communication skills.
  • Written and spoken fluency in English.
  • Written and spoken fluency in an additional language, especially Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Somali or Hmong is highly desired.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work as a team with compassion and humor.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to travel: local project-related travel as required, including project-related site visits *
  • Work minimum of eight hours per day, five days per week
  • Sit or stand at a desk for extended periods
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English
  • Be able to walk and move around at job sites.
  • Be able to kneel, crouch, or stoop to be able to position self to see different areas of project sites.
