Job Summary: The city has an available internship in the Community Development Department. We are seeking applications for interns interested in a career in local, municipal, or related career path. This position offers an exciting opportunity for internship, offering hands-on tasks which may include but are not limited to:

Support the creation and establishment of the city’s new development tracking, license and permitting system. Research and enter records to create entitlement records (zoning, variances, certificate of appropriateness, plats and like records as examples).

Collaborate with city staff and consultants in the Comprehensive Plan update. Expected intern contributions include critical analytical review draft document content, support of community outreach preparation and open house meetings.

The position may be called on to engage in other planning projects including but not limited to zoning history and property record research; working in teams; and assisting office functions.

The internship planning professional is typically the first practice a future planner obtains in the profession. Successful internships result in valuable learning opportunities and knowledge of the field for students as they advance their education and career. Planning professionals are vastly diverse in their background and education; the field includes but is not limited to: public administrators, landscape architects, engineers, architects, journalists, lawyers, and business technical writers. 

Typical Job Duties

  • Collects, creates and maintains records for land development records, historic preservation records, and similar department records.
  • Coordinates with other staff and departments to confirm data needs and assess accuracy of product.
  • Evaluates and assists in file maintenance and record keeping.
  • Assists in collecting and preparing data for various planning projects.
  • As needed assist with other Community Development office functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College student.
  • Demonstrated interest in or considering and/or engaged in the study of public administration, urban planning, geography or other similar social science degree.
  • Ability to work a minimum 8 hours per week for the budgeted year.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Motivated self-starter able to work independently.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Flexibility and desire to work on varying planning projects.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Interpersonal skills – via face to face or telephone.
  • Proficient in Computers, i.e.
    • Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, ability to quickly learn other software/applications.
  • Professional in appearance.
  • Flexible, punctual, reliable, and teachable.
  • Project task completion-oriented.

 Students will Gain

  • Real-time instruction, small group and independent workflows and constructive evaluation of accomplishments.

  • Best practices and knowledge acquired during specific tasks which are applicable to a business recruitment and business retention and expansion.

Requirements:  

This internship is ideal for college students wanting “hands-on” experience in the basics of the department, with an emphasis on municipal government. Almost all work is completed at Granbury City Hall. High level of data usage required.

Special Requirements

Average of 15 to 20 hours a week. Flexible weekdays between 8:30am and 5:00pm. Approx. twice monthly, evening or weekend hours for public meetings.

Miscellaneous Information:  Position requires sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
