The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full-time Senior Planner in the Planning and Development Services Department.

Formal Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field from an accredited school or university. A Masters Degree in Urban Planning or a related field is preferred.

Relatable Work Experience:

  • Four years of work-related experience in Urban Planning at the local level, either in the public or the private sector. Municipal Experience is preferred.

Training (License and/or Certification):

  • Valid Texas Driver License.
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides primary assistance in reviewing development applications including site plans, plats, general land plans, rezonings, conditional use permits, working on strategic initiatives, and administration of the Development Code of the City of Sugar Land.
  • Communicates requirements of Development Code and applicable regulations with applicants.
  • Assists interdepartmental staff through the approval process and coordinates with other departments who are a part of the development review process.
  • Prepares staff reports and makes public presentations of planning matters pending before the Planning and Zoning Commission, City Council, Zoning Board of Adjustment or other boards or committees.
  • Assists in mentoring other Planning staff such as Planner I or Planner II as appropriate.
  • Provides leadership for pre-development and pre-application conferencing with applicants as directed by the Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services, as well as periodic co-chairing of the Development Review Committee (DRC) in the place of the Principal Planner.
  • Collaborates across department lines to accomplish project objectives by establishing consensus, fostering productive relationships, and resolving differences and conflicts.
  • Occasionally assists Principal Planner with hiring, directing, and managing consultant teams utilized for planning projects; includes assistance with developing project scope, scheduling project milestones, and directing the project as needed.
